2026 Star WR Kervin Johnson Jr. Shocks Fans with Last-Minute Flip to LSU—What Sparked the Sudden Change?

Well, here’s a twist nobody saw coming — LSU may have dropped its head coach on Sunday, but that hasn’t slowed their recruiting momentum one bit. In fact, on Monday, the Tigers reeled in a fresh 2026 commitment that’s turning some heads. Kervin Johnson Jr., a solid three-star wide receiver, decided to pivot from Louisiana Tech to Baton Rouge shortly after a weekend visit — and that offer from LSU’s staff on Saturday sealed the deal. It’s a bold move considering the coaching upheaval less than 24 hours prior, with Brian Kelly and offensive coordinator Joe Sloan exiting the scene. Yet, standing 6-foot-2 and weighing in around 200 pounds, Johnson’s clearly eyeing the SEC spotlight and is ready to bet on whichever new leadership steps in. Ranked No. 310 nationally for wide receivers and No. 58 in Louisiana by the Rivals Industry, this commitment signals LSU’s relentless drive despite the chaos. Stay tuned, because this story is just heating up. LEARN MORE

LSU firing its head coach on Sunday doesn’t stop the recruiting wheel, and on Monday the Tigers landed a new 2026 commitment.

Three-star wideout Kervin Johnson Jr. flipped his pledge from Louisiana Tech to the Bayou Bengals after visiting over the weekend. He had been pledged to the Bulldogs since September 3, but received interest — an ultimately an offer from LSU’s staff on Saturday.

Not long after that happened, he made his decision to join the Tigers’ class.

Johnson joins LSU less than 24 hours after the program fired head coach Brian Kelly — owing him more than $50 million in buyout money — as well as offensive coordinator Joe Sloan on Monday morning.

But the 6-foot-2, 200-pounder wants the chance to play in the SEC and for whichever new coaching staff ultimately arrives in Baton Rouge.

He ranks as the nation’s No. 310 wide receiver and No. 58 player in Louisiana, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, an equally weighted average that utilizes all three major recruiting services.
