5 College Football Coaches Who Could Eventually Leave For The NFL (1:51)

Though it’s not really a huge surprise, several SEC teams will enter the 2025 college football season as a national title contender. However, there’s one in particular that stands out from the rest – at least right now.

Earlier this week, ESPN unveiled its power rankings for the SEC. As of now, Kentucky and Mississippi State are expected to be towards the bottom of the standings this fall. Vanderbilt is also ranked very low despite having a proven playmaker at quarterback in Diego Pavia.

The top of the list, meanwhile, features the usual suspects like Alabama and Georgia. There’ll be plenty of eyes on the Crimson Tide this year after a disappointing finish to their first season in the Kalen DeBoer era. It’s imperative they bounce back and contend for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

While ESPN is very high on Alabama and Georgia, neither program claimed the No. 1 spot in this week’s power rankings. The title of best team in the SEC currently belongs to Texas.

The Longhorns should contend for a national title as long as quarterback Arch Manning plays up to his potential.

“Steve Sarkisian loves his roster, and he has plenty of reason to be excited with Manning, receivers DeAndre Moore Jr. and Ryan Wingo, and tailbacks Quintrevion Wisner and CJ Baxter returning. The Longhorns will have to replace four starting offensive linemen and fill some holes on the defensive front,” ESPN wrote in its SEC power rankings.

Here are the top five teams in the SEC, according to ESPN:

  1. Texas
  2. Georgia
  3. Alabama
  4. LSU
  5. Texas A&M

Texas will be put to the test during its season opener against Ohio State. A road victory in Columbus would prove that Steve Sarkisian’s program is ready to win a national title.

As for Alabama and Georgia, they’ll actually square off on Sept. 27. It’ll be interesting to see which program comes out on top.
