Jon Gruden’s Dream Comeback? The Surprising Team Topping New Coaching Rankings Revealed

So, Jon Gruden—the man known as much for his fiery sideline antics as his football genius—dropped a bombshell over the weekend in Athens: he wants back in the coaching game, and not just anywhere, but in the SEC. The same guy who stepped away amid scandal now openly fantasizes about coaching “between the hedges” at Georgia, dreaming of outwitting Kirby Smart himself. Crazy? Maybe. Ambitious? Absolutely. Here’s the kicker—Gruden’s eye isn’t just on any SEC gig; whispers point to LSU as his dream landing spot, where fans and boosters alike are starving for a championship. Are we on the brink of seeing “Chucky” sideline drama in Death Valley? It’s worth asking—can Gruden’s fiery passion and sharp offensive mind rekindle SEC powerhouses, or will the ghosts of his past hold him back? One thing’s for sure: if Gruden suits up for college football, the SEC just got a lot more interesting. LEARN MORE.

He said he wants to coach in the SEC.

Jon Gruden made some waves over the weekend during a recent appearance in Athens where he revealed that the reason for his visit was because he wants to one day coach in the SEC.

The soon to be 62-year-old ex-Raiders coach has been out of football for several years now following the email scandal that ended his second stint with the team in 2021. But he appears as eager as ever to wear the headset again and he’s apparently hoping that it will be in the conference where it just means more.

“The only reason I really came here is because I want to coach again,” Gruden said Saturday. “I’m being honest with you. I do not bulls—t either. I’d die to coach in the SEC. I would love it. I would f—ing love it.”

“I sit there and I fantasize — I’m fantasizing on the [practice] field. I said, ‘Man, I wish I was coaching against the SEC.’ I want to come to Georgia, between the hedges. I’m fantasizing about going up against Kirby Smart. I’m an offensive coach you see,” the former Super Bowl champ continued.

“I’m over there fantasizing about coming down here and beating Georgia in the hedges. That’s what I’m fantasizing about. Because whether you like it or not, you’re the f—ing measuring stick that I base my whole career on as a coach.”

Gruden’s potential jump to the college ranks would be a massive splash at whatever program he may eventually land at. And according to OutKick’s Austin Perry, one school far and away makes the most sense: the LSU Tigers.

Jon Gruden’s No. 1 Team

“Shocked? You shouldn’t be,” Perry wrote. “To me, this is the best job in college football when being completely unbiased, and Gruden would be a fool to turn this one down. The resources are there. The boosters are hungry for another championship. And the recruiting grounds are fertile and loyal to the flagship university of the state.”

“‘But, Austin,’ I hear you say, ‘Brian Kelly isn’t leaving anytime soon,'” he continued. “You underestimate how rabid these LSU fans are, dear reader. Winning nine games and going to the Texas Bowl every year may fly for some programs, but not LSU.”

“If the Tigers fail to make some noise in the playoffs with this roster, Kelly is as good as gone,” the writer predicted. “And guess who will be there to pick up the pieces? This one makes the most sense to me of the potential jobs I mentioned, both in terms of fit and how realistic the scenario is.”

Brian Kelly definitely needs to have LSU start looking like the dominant football team that they should be — and it’s easy to imagine Chucky on the sideline in Death Valley — but other schools like the Vols, Gators and Razorbacks could also make a ton of sense for Gruden if he’s dead set on the SEC.
