Hawks Make Surprise Move: Former Magic Forward Joins the Roster—What This Means for the Season

So, the Atlanta Hawks just added Caleb Houstan to their horde of hopefuls for the 2025-26 season—and honestly, it’s got me wondering: can this former Orlando Magic forward carve out a niche on a roster that’s suddenly deeper than a philosopher’s midnight thoughts? They’ve been busy stacking talent from all corners—Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Luke Kennard, Kristaps Porzingis—and now Houstan, whose sharp three-point touch might just be the secret weapon hiding in plain sight. But with minutes scarce and competition fierce, will Houstan’s shot be more than a whisper off the bench, or is he yet another piece forced to fight for crumbs? Either way, the Hawks aren’t done yet, and I’m here for every twist before the season tips off.

The Atlanta Hawks have been working hard this offseason and are clearly attempting to build a stronger and deeper roster for the 2025-26 season.

They have already added Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Luke Kennard, and Kristaps Porzingis, which might bring them more support all over the floor.

But now they have added another player: Caleb Houstan, formerly of the Orlando Magic.

The Hawks celebrated this move on social media on Tuesday.

The Magic released Houstan at the end of the 2024-25 season, and he initially had a tough time finding a new team to play with.

But the Hawks have decided that he could be an important player for them in the new season.

In 2024-25, Houstan averaged 4.1 points and 1.3 rebounds, playing for just 13.6 minutes per game.

He would like to do more for the Hawks, but it’s not clear if he will be able to.

Because Atlanta has been so busy, their roster is deeper than it has been in years.

That means that Houstan will have to battle hard in order to earn every single minute, and head coach Quin Snyder just may not have many opportunities for him.

However, it is worth noting that his three-point shooting has gotten progressively better over his three years in the league.

Last season, he had a 42.1 field goal percentage and was 40.0 percent from the three-point line.

So the Hawks might be able to utilize him as a shooter, someone who can come off the bench and sink some well-timed threes when they need it most.

That could be Houstan’s biggest asset and key to him playing more often for Atlanta in the new year.

Are the Hawks done, or will they make more moves before October?

They have been busy since the start of the summer, but they could have a few more ideas up their sleeves.
