Klay Thompson Drops Cryptic Clue About Life Beyond the NBA—What’s Next for the Star?

Klay Thompson’s journey with the Dallas Mavericks is like a thrilling new chapter in a well-loved novel – but it’s clear this story won’t stretch on forever. Have you ever wondered what happens when a sharpshooter of his caliber steps off the NBA hardwood for good? Thompson’s recent chat with Michael Cooper peeled back the curtain just a bit, hinting that post-NBA life might find him lighting up the BIG3 league’s courts instead. That’s right—the very league sparking excitement with its unique four-point shot and star-studded 3-on-3 battles created by Ice Cube. Could this be the next playground for a man who still has plenty of fuel left in his tank, even at 35? Let’s dive into what this leap from the NBA to BIG3 could mean—not just for Thompson, but for basketball’s evolving landscape worldwide.

Klay Thompson is enjoying his time with the Dallas Mavericks, but he won’t be in the NBA forever.

His plans post-NBA aren’t known, but he certainly has some options.

Speaking with Michael Cooper on NBA History & Storytellers, Thompson suggested that he’d play in the popular BIG3 league after he steps away from the association.

“Absolutely, especially with that four-point ball,” Thompson answered. “That gets me excited. I want the BIG3 to go international. That’d be so fun to see the BIG3 go overseas and do a tour.”

BIG3 got its start only a few years ago in 2017, but it’s earned a ton of fans in less than 10 years.

Created by Ice Cube and Jeff Kwatinetz, the league is all about three-on-three games featuring former NBA stars.

As it has become more and more successful, the league has expanded and added new teams and television deals.

Current and former players have been spotted courtside during BIG3 games, so the idea of Thompson suiting up isn’t out of the question.

But it’s too soon to be talking about this for Thompson, because he still has several years left in his career.

He is 35 years old and has remained in relatively good health over the last few seasons.

Last year, he participated in 72 games and averaged 14.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists on 41.2 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from the three-point line.

He may not be producing the sort of numbers he did when he was with the Golden State Warriors, but Thompson still has a lot of fight left in him and isn’t close to retirement.

But when the time does come, Thompson may not step away from basketball for very long.
