  • USA TODAY Sports staff writers provide their predictions for several key Week 6 college football matchups.

Notre Dame football looks like it has turned a corner, as it has won two games in-a-row and will look to make it a third on Saturday as Boise State comes to town.

The Broncos lost their season opener against South Florida, but have won its next three games as they’ll get set to face the Irish. It’s one of the more compelling games of the weekend, but not the top contest.

There a few other games of significance during Week 6, as the staff here of Tim Healey, Dave Miller and Michael Chen pick the winners of each of those games along with Boise State at Notre Dame.

Wisconsin Badgers (2-2) at No. 20 Michigan Wolverines (3-1)

Game data: Saturday at 11:00 a.m. CST on FOX

Healey – Michigan may not be a true CFP contender this year but the Wolverines are still pretty good this year, and I don’t expect them to struggle with Wisconsin at all. Wolverines should cruise.

Miller – I am not sure what has happened to Wisconsin football under Luke Fickell, but it’s been on a decline and he is squarely on the hot seat. Both teams are coming off of a bye week, and Badgers quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. (knee) could return. Fickell’s defense only allows 50 rushing yards per game, so Wolverines QB Bryce Underwood is going to have to make some plays through the air. I think he makes enough after a slow start as the Wolverines open up the offensive game plan a little more each week with their young signal caller.

Chen – I hate to say it but it seems like the Luke Fickell experiment at Wisconsin hasn’t been a success. Looking at that from a Notre Dame perspective, if he gets fired, a reunion with Marcus Freeman would be great. They coached together at Cincinnati, and it would be a role reversal from their past. It doesn’t matter one the field, as I think Michigan wins fairly easily.

No. 16 Vanderbilt Commodores (5-0) at No. 10 Alabama Crimson Tide (3-1)

Game data: Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CST on ABC

Healey – Alabama gets revenge for last year’s shocking loss, as they didn’t take Vandy seriously. They will this year, and you’ll see a motivated Crimson Tide.

Miller – The Commodores aren’t going to sneak up on the Crimson Tide after beating them for the first time in 40 years last season, a 40-35 upset of the then-No. 1 Tide in Nashville. The ‘Dores rank No. 2 in the SEC with 223.4 rushing yards per game, and the Crimson Tide had issues stopping the run in last week’s win at Georgia, as the Bulldogs averaged 6.9 yards per carry and racked up 227 yards on the ground.

Alabama’s passing game is potent under QB Ty Simpson, who looks very comfortable and has top weapons in Ryan Williams and Germie Bernard. Meanwhile, Vandy has allowed nine touchdowns through the air. Roll Tide!

Chen – After Alabama lost to Florida State, they’ve rebounded with three straight wins including last week’s on the road against Georgia. Many, including myself, wrote off the Tide, however, they look like they’ve turned the corner. Vandy isn’t coming into this game without being tested, with wins over Virginia Tech and South Carolina, both on the road. Diego Pavia is one of the most exciting players in college, but he won’t be enough to lead them to victory.

No. 24 Virginia Cavaliers (4-1) at Louisville Cardinals (4-0)

Healey – This one is a toss-up, and I usually go with the home team in that scenario, but my gut is telling me the Cavs will take this one. Maybe it’s because they’re ranked and Louisville is not. Regardless, if I gambled, which I don’t, I’d avoid this one.

Miller – The Cardinals are looking for their fourth straight win over a Cavaliers team that just upset Florida State. They have the playmakers to keep up with UVA’s offense, led by QB Chandler Morris, who has been potent both through the air and on the ground. The Cardinals have done a better job defending the pass, and I think they’ll be able to get one more stop than the Hoos at home.

Chen – These two teams are pretty evenly matched, and it should be a fun game. There’s going to be plenty of points scored in this one, but I think Louisville has a big more firepower.

No. 11 Texas Tech Red Raiders (4-0) at Houston Cougars (4-0)

Game data: Saturday at 6:00 p.m. CST on ESPN

Healey – Texas Tech is off to a good start and I don’t see that changing here. Pencil Houston in for its first loss.

Miller – While the Cougars are unbeaten, they needed to rally from being down 14 points to beat Oregon State in overtime last week. And they have had issues up front protecting QB Conner Weigman. This may be a rude awakening against that Red Raiders defensive line, so this one has a chance to get ugly.

Chen – The winners of the off-season, the Red Raiders have responded by winning each of its game in convincing style. Houston, who is a very good team as well, has been tested much more. If this one is close, the Cougars might have an advantage, but I don’t think that’s the case as Texas Tech continues to roll.

No. 3 Miami Hurricanes (4-0) at No. 18 Florida State Seminoles (3-1)

Game data: Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CST on ABC

Healey – Miami is for real — and I think the Hurricanes have more staying power than they did in 2024. Florida State is frisky but us Notre Dame fans saw how talented and deep the Hurricanes are a few weeks ago. I expect the Seminoles to keep it close but Miami wins in the end.

Miller – The Hurricanes defense will face a test in FSU’s Gus Malzahn-coordinated offense, led by QB Tommy Castellanos. The Seminoles should score points, but so should the ‘Canes, who also have one of the best offensive lines in the country and are coming off of a bye. It was surprising to see UVA have as much success offensively as it did in the upset over the ‘Noles, so I expect the ‘Canes to also be able to move the ball comfortably as well in a road win.

Chen – From a Notre Dame perspective, we are all Hurricanes fans. We need them to continue to look good, and there’s a good chance they will. The Seminoles do have a good win over the Crimson Tide, but couldn’t seal the deal against Virginia last weekend. They’ll lose their second in-a-row as Miami continues its resurgence.

Boise State will present more of a challenge than Arkansas did, but this isn’t the playoff team from last year. The Irish do need to avoid complacency, that’s an issue that’s dogged them. If Notre Dame remembers what’s at stake and doesn’t overlook the opponent, it should be fine, but I don’t expect a true blowout. I expect one of those games — I don’t think there’s a word for it — where the lead is somewhat but not completely comfortable near the end. Not a close one, not a blowout, somewhere in between. Maybe like Notre Dame 35, Boise State 24.

The Fighting Irish will face a good Boise State team. Now, are these your oldest brother’s Broncos? Probably not, but Boise is strong defensively. Still, the Irish have had success offensively against all of their opponents thus far. And they really broke out last week in the road win over Arkansas, which ended up costing Sam Pittman his job.

Since 2000, Boise is in the top three programs for most wins in the FBS, and the Broncos made the College Football Playoff last year. Boise will put up a fight, but it ranks 121st in the FBS in red zone defense, allowing opponents to score on 100 percent of their trips. ND will pull away in the second half, 38-20.

Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Nelson Chenault-Imagn Images

After doubting Notre Dame’s defense last week, they’ve make big improvements all over the field, as they’re getting more comfortable with what Chris Ash is trying to accomplish. There is no doubting the Irish offense, as CJ Carr is on the cusp of being a household name, and Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price has been nothing short of dominant. This is not the Boise State of last year, and I don’t think Notre Dame has any issues on Saturday.
