With the UNC football team’s seemingly-endless stream of on-field struggles, one question rings bright: will Bill Belichick still be able to recruit at a high level?

Kids want to play for winning programs, which North Carolina isn’t right now. The Tar Heels won games against Charlotte and Richmond, temporarily alleviating issues from their season-opening loss to TCU, but gave up 30+ points in losses to both UCF and Clemson.

UNC still has a solid 2026 recruiting class, but recently lost one piece of that class. On Monday evening, 3-star wide receiver O’Mari Johnson de-committed from North Carolina – for a second time.

Johnson, who plays his high school football at Jackson Academy in Mississippi’s capital, is his home state’s 17th-ranked recruit.

Johnson initially committed to the Tar Heels on April 6, then backed off on May 30. UNC landed a re-commitment from Johnson on July 1, then lost his pledge again on Monday.

Even with Johnson’s de-commitment, North Carolina still has a pretty hefty 2026 recruiting class, highlighted by 11 commitments from 4-star prospects. If the Tar Heels continue to spiral, though, expect additional de-commitments in the coming weeks.

This is Belichick’s first season coaching college football, but that’s an old excuse now. Fans aren’t expecting immediate greatness, which will take time, but a better product considering Belichick’s coaching pedigree.
