Ian Rapoport Drops Shocking Update That Could Change Tua Tagovailoa’s Future Forever
Can you really blame the Miami Dolphins if they’re starting to eye the exit ramp for Tua Tagovailoa? After a tough 2-7 skid that saw their Thursday Night Football hopes dashed against the Baltimore Ravens, it’s clear the tides aren’t turning any time soon. With GM Will Grier out the door and whispers of rebuilding swirling, it seems like the franchise might soon be asking: is it time to bench their star quarterback and give Zach Wilson or rookie Quinn Ewers a shot? The clock’s ticking on what’s been a rollercoaster season, and frankly, the idea of playing it safe—or strategic—by protecting Tua from further injury while eyeing the next draft pick, makes a heck of a lot of sense. Let’s dive into why this shake-up feels less like a shock and more like an overdue reality check.

The Miami Dolphins couldn’t keep the ball rolling on Thursday Night Football.
They failed to keep the momentum going against the Baltimore Ravens, and they’re now 2-7 after nine games.
That has positioned them as potential sellers ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline, especially with GM Will Grier also losing his job.
With that in mind, and given how poorly he’s performed this season, Ian Rapoport wouldn’t be shocked to see Tua Tagovailoa being benched.
In his latest column, the renowned NFL Network insider predicted that both Zach Wilson and Quinn Ewers could be in line to make a start at some point in the season:
“Zach Wilson has resumed his role as the No. 2 QB, and he has experience with 33 starts while with the Jets. Wilson is one option. Seventh-round rookie Quinn Ewers impressed enough to replace Wilson for one game recently as Tagovailoa’s primary backup, and he’s come on in practice, as well. The possibility that Ewers could play meaningful snaps if Tagovailoa continues to struggle should not be discounted. Tagovailoa’s play would have to really fall off for Miami to turn to either Wilson or Ewers, but a potential benching is not off the table at some point this season,” Rapoport wrote.
Truth be told, that makes perfect sense, and it’s exactly the route this team should take at this point.
They already know what they have on their hands with Tua, and he’s not going to get much better than this, at least not in this offense.
They need to figure out whether Wilson or Ewers could be a starter, even though moving on from Tua would result in a massive dead cap hit.
But Tua has been through so many injuries in the past, and with this being a lost season already, there’s no point in risking further injury, regardless of whether they want him to come back next season or not.
This team is long overdue for a rebuild, and with Mike McDonald also potentially losing his head coaching position in the offseason, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to secure a top-five selection in the 2026 NFL Draft.
