Packers Eye Surprising Veteran TE Move That Could Change Their Season Before Trade Deadline

So here we are—Week 9 hits the Green Bay Packers like a cold Wisconsin gust, not just with a loss at Lambeau Field but with a gut punch that leaves you wondering, “What’s next?” Tucker Kraft, their tight end and All-Pro hopeful, goes down with a season-ending ACL injury. Ouch. It’s the kind of setback that forces a team into rapid-fire decision mode—enter the trade deadline ticking mercilessly close. Now, word on the icy street is that the Packers are eyeing Cleveland’s David Njoku. Think about it: a veteran tight end with some hiccups but still capable of shaking defenses and fitting snugly into Jordan Love’s midfield magic. The Browns, juggling emerging talent and contract limbo, might just be ready to cut bait. Could this be a win-win or another fleeting band-aid? Well, if you asked me, this dance on the NFL clock is exactly the kind of drama that makes football so unexpectedly fascinating.

The Green Bay Packers were dealt a massive blow in Week 9.

Not only did they lose at home to the Carolina Panthers, but they also lost one of their best players.

Tight end Tucker Kraft, who was in the midst of an All-Pro-caliber season, suffered a season-ending ACL injury.

With that in mind, and with the NFL trade deadline hours away, the Packers could make a move to replace him, as they are being linked to Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku.

“The emergence of third-round draft pick Harold Fannin Jr. makes Njoku an ideal trade candidate for Cleveland, a team that is once again in rebuild mode. A tight end needy team could pounce (hello, Packers?),” Yahoo Sports wrote.

Truth be told, this is a move that would make perfect sense for all parties involved.

While Njoku has had some minor injuries and never broke out as the pass-catching threat he seemed capable of being, he’s a proven veteran.

He can be a mismatch in the red zone and in the middle of the field.

Packers quarterback Jordan Love thrives in those intermediate routes, and Njoku looked like a potential star when a gunslinger like Joe Flacco was leading the Browns’ offense.

More than that, Njoku is about to become a free agent, and with no contract extension yet, Cleveland can’t risk losing him without getting anything in return.

The Browns have a budding star and replacement in Fannin, so losing Njoku shouldn’t hurt them that much.

Also, the Packers likely wouldn’t have to give up that much to get him, and if Kraft is going to be back for the start of next season, they could let Njoku walk after a short-term rental.
