Devils' Jack Hughes Mysteriously Injured at Team Dinner—What Really Happened?

You hate to see it — just when Jack Hughes was tearing it up on the ice, knocking in goals and racking up points like he owned the rink, life threw a curveball his way. Word broke Friday that Hughes took an unexpected hit off the ice, slicing his hand during what was supposed to be a team dinner Thursday night. Nobody’s quite sure how it happened — the buzz is he slipped and ended up with a nasty cut, a true “fluke accident,” if you will. This injury means he’s almost certainly sitting out Saturday’s face-off against Washington, though the timeline for his return? That’s still up in the air. For a guy who’s been lighting it up with 10 goals and 20 points in just 17 games, this is a blow not only to him but also to the Devils and Team USA, all hoping this nightmare scenario stays far from serious. We’ll keep you posted as the story unfolds. LEARN MORE.

It’s an incredibly unfortunate story, but word came Friday that Jack Hughes suffered a hand injury while at a team dinner Thursday night.

Exact details are unknown at this time, but it’s believed he slipped and cut his hand, in what multiple sources are calling a “fluke accident.”

He is not expected to play Saturday against Washington, but the exact timeline is not yet known.

Hughes was off to a fantastic start, with 10 goals and 20 points in 17 games for the 12-4-1 Devils, who lead the Metropolitan Division. He had two assists during Wednesday’s 4-3 overtime victory in Chicago, one of the best games played in the NHL this season.

More details as they become available, but it’s something Hughes, the Devils and Team USA are hoping is not a serious scenario.
