Giants Make Shocking Move: Defensive Coordinator Shane Bowen Axed After Lions Breakdown—What’s Next for the Team?

It’s been a rough stretch for the New York Giants, surrendering no less than 24 points in half a dozen consecutive games — and this defensive slide just cost Shane Bowen his job. Yep, the Giants pulled the trigger on their defensive coordinator Monday following yet another tough outing, an overtime loss where Detroit put up 34 on the board. Bowen, who took the reins before the 2024 season, saw his defense dip from a middling 21st in points allowed to a near-bottom 30th this year, giving up nearly 28 points per game through a dozen contests. It’s a clear signal the Giants are eager to change gears on defense as they fight to regain footing. LEARN MORE

After giving up at least 24 points in each of their last six games, the New York Giants are reportedly moving on without defensive coordinator Shane Bowen. The team fired Bowen on Monday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The move comes a day after the Giants allowed 34 points in an overtime loss to the Detroit Lions.

Bowen, 38, was originally named the team’s defensive coordinator ahead of the 2024 NFL season. The Giants ranked 21st in points against during his first season at the helm, allowing 24.4 points per game. Those numbers regressed in 2025. Through 12 games, the Giants rank 30th in points allowed, giving up 27.8 points per game.
