Colts WR Drops Surprising Comparison Between Rising Star Drake Maye and NFL Veteran Daniel Jones—What It Means for the Season

Here’s a curious little nugget for you: when you watch Drake Maye warming up at Gillette Stadium, does he remind you a bit of Daniel Jones hustling downfield with the Colts? I mean, it’s not every day you see two quarterbacks—each carving out impressive 2025 seasons—who seem to echo each other’s grit and game in such a striking way. Josh Downs, uniquely positioned having caught passes from both in college and now in the pros, didn’t hold back on The Schultz Report, pointing out just how closely these two competitors mirror one another’s relentless drive and athletic hustle. With Maye leading the Patriots’ aerial assault and Jones steering the Colts to atop the AFC South, this comparison isn’t just idle chatter—it’s a compelling narrative of two gridiron warriors charging toward postseason glory. So, what’s really fueling this unexpected kinship between Maye and Jones, and could their shared tenacity signal something bigger for their squads? Let’s dive into the playbook on that.

Drake Maye has played a significant role in the New England Patriots’ success during his second year at quarterback. Meanwhile, Daniel Jones has contributed to an unexpectedly strong season with the Indianapolis Colts.

Both signal-callers have drawn comparisons that extend beyond their current NFL success. Josh Downs, Colts wide receiver, previously played alongside Maye at the University of North Carolina.

Now catching passes from Jones in the 2025 season, Downs recently highlighted what he sees as notable similarities between the two quarterbacks. Speaking on The Schultz Report, Downs explained his perspective on both competitors.

“I’d say their competitive drive is very similar. They’ll put their body on the line. I think they’re very similar in that manner, and just how hard they work. They’re athletic for sure. They really will go out there and run and do anything to get that first down. That’s when you know you got a real competitor,” Downs said.

Entering this season, comparisons to Jones were generally viewed negatively. His performance with the Indianapolis Colts has shifted that perception significantly. Jones has thrown for 2,840 yards and 17 touchdowns, helping Indianapolis hold first place in the AFC South entering Week 13.

After signing a one-year, $14 million contract in free agency, Jones earned the starting role over Anthony Richardson and has led the team to an 8-3 record. Maye has also delivered strong production for the Patriots, leading the NFL with 3,130 passing yards along with 21 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Given the strong play from both quarterbacks, the comparison between them appears justified, with both potentially guiding their teams into postseason play.
