Texas A&M Senior Guard Shatters 1,000-Point Barrier—What's Next for This Rising Star?

Texas A&M is making waves this season, standing shoulder to shoulder with Florida at the summit of the SEC basketball rankings, riding high off a gritty 74-70 victory over their long-time rivals, Texas. That win wasn’t just another notch on the belt—it was their second highly coveted Quad 1 victory, setting a powerful tone as they prepare to return home to Reed Arena to face Mississippi State. The game was a tale of two halves: after a balanced first half marked by a 42% shooting clip and a clutch three-pointer from Texas guard Tramon Marks to knot things at 29, the Aggies’ senior transfer guard Rylan Griffen exploded in the second half. Griffen lit the scoreboard with 17 points, matching the dominant double-double performance of forward Rashaun Agee, and sealing his place as a key player to watch. Griffen’s journey—from Alabama to Kansas to Texas A&M—has been nothing short of remarkable, and with his recent achievement of surpassing 1,000 career collegiate points, his impact will only grow deeper as this season unfolds. Texas A&M (14-4, 4-1 SEC) is tied with Florida atop the SEC basketball standings after defeating rival Texas 74-70 on the road, with the first leg of the annual Lone Star Showdown, while earning its second Quad 1 win before heading back to Reed Arena to host Mississippi State on Wednesday night.

After shooting 42% from the field in the first half, combined with Texas guard Tramon Marks tying the game at 29 after draining a 3-pointer before halftime, Texas A&M senior transfer guard Rylan Griffen was held scoreless before erupting in the second half for 17 points, matching star forward Rashaun Agee’s 17-point, 11-rebound performance.

Wanting to be considered a complete player aside from his 3-point shooting ability, Griffen has been a focal point over the last three games, scoring, 14, 10 and now 17 points against Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas, while shooting 85% against the Longhorns, slicing and dicing his way through the paint, and hit four 3-pointers, including his final deep shot that all-but sealed the victory.

After transferring from Kansas, where he spent one season after two successful years with Alabama, Griffen’s impact is undeniable, as the Dallas, Texas native is averaging a career-best 11.2 points per game while shooting an impressive 51% from the field and 42.7% from beyond the arc.

After Saturday’s performance, Griffen passed the century mark with 1,000 points in his collegiate career, which will only increase as the 2026 season rolls on.
