Michigan Shocks MSU in Thrilling Friday Showdown: What It Means for the Big Ten Race
Friday night’s showdown was nothing short of electrifying — a clash between two powerhouse squads, both nestled comfortably in the top 10, but separated by a fierce rivalry that added fire to every possession . Michigan, road warriors with a 19-1 record, faced off against a tenacious Michigan State team riding a seven-game winning streak. The stakes? Sky-high. The atmosphere? Absolutely buzzing. For fans of college hoops, this was the type of game you circle on your calendar months in advance — the kind where legends are either born or broken. It was a true test of grit, skill, and heart under the brightest lights. Curious about how it all unfolded? Dive into the drama, the momentum swings, and the gritty performances that shaped one of the season’s most talked-about contests.
Friday night was a big one for the league, as a top 10 Michigan squad went on the road to battle another top 10 team in Michigan State. Add in the fuel of a rivalry and it figured to be quite a night.
Let’s take a look at what happened.

Heading into tip, most books had this as a pick ‘em or a slight lean toward Michigan. And it was easy to see why, with both squads entering the night with impressive records. Michigan sat at 19-1 and was coming off a massive win over Nebraska on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Michigan State was 19-2 and had won seven straight. Seeing teams with records like that in late January is rare enough, but a combined 38-3 in a Friday night rivalry game? It’s about as good as you’re going to get in college basketball.
And the game itself mostly lived up to the hype. Michigan came firing out of the gates and jumped out to an 18-point lead by the break. However, Michigan State fought back after the break, eventually not only erasing the Wolverines’ lead, but grabbing it themselves around the seven-minute mark of the second half. It was anyone’s game at that point, but Michigan got play after play from Yaxel Lendeborg, who finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds, en route to victory. Morez Johnson was also huge on both ends of the floor and finished with 12 points and four rebounds. Elliot Cadeau had 17 points and six assists, as Michigan grabbed a 12-point road win.

For Michigan, it’s hard to understate the significance of this one. It was a gritty win that silenced many of the team’s critics. After Tuesday night’s win over Nebraska, many claimed Michigan had only won because the Cornhuskers were shorthanded. And while we’ll never know if that was true, the Wolverines proved they can play with anyone in any location on Friday night. This was about as raucous of a crowd as you’ll see in college basketball and Michigan was able to overcome it against a top 10 opponent. Add in Michigan’s recent rivalry woes against the Spartans (having lost four straight) and the win gets only sweeter.
On the other side, Spartan fans have to be frustrated with this one. While the team was in position to win at multiple points, it never felt like Michigan State was the better team. The Spartans couldn’t shoot and struggled to create anything without Jeremy Fears. In fact, Fears accounted for 43.7 percent of the team’s scoring by himself. And when you add in his seven assists and four steals, the picture looks even more dramatic. It’s hard to picture the Spartans winning the Big Ten or doing anything substantial in March without finding a legitimate Robin to Fears’ Batman.
Friday’s outcome, naturally, also had a significant impact on the Big Ten title race. There was a four-way tie heading into tip, but Michigan State now dropped a full game out of first with the loss. The standings now have Michigan in first, Illinois and Nebraska a half game back, Michigan State a full game back, and Purdue, UCLA, and Wisconsin two games back.
The biggest change was a massive collapse in Michigan State’s conference title hopes. The Spartans were a legitimate contender before tip, but now find themselves with just 6.3 percent odds of earning a share of the crown after Friday’s outcome. That’s a devastating result. Projections can change, but it’s going to be an uphill climb for Michigan State moving forward.
The Wolverines will now prepare for Penn State at home on Thursday. The Spartans will get Minnesota on the road on Wednesday.
