Former NFL Star’s Surprising Move to Illinois Coaching Staff Shocks Fans
Bret Bielema is zeroing in on seasoned expertise to reshape his coaching roster this offseason, and his latest move is nothing short of intriguing. Enter Tyrone Wheatley — a powerhouse with a résumé that spans from blazing trails as a standout Michigan running back to carving out a respected niche as both an NFL and collegiate coach. Illinois is set to gain a real asset here, bringing Wheatley aboard as their new running backs coach, a role that feels like a perfect fit given his vast experience and former head coaching stint at Wayne State. With a knack for developing elite talent and a history steeped in Big Ten football, Wheatley’s impact could resonate immediately — even as the team navigates positional shifts like Kaden Feagin’s move to tight end. There’s a lot to unpack with this addition, and trust me, this story is one you’ll want to follow closely.

A star college RB at Michigan (4,187 rushing yards, 53 touchdowns), Wheatley has been around the block in the NFL and collegiate ranks as both a player and coach. He most recently served as head coach at Wayne State in Michigan.
“Coach Wheatley is an accomplished coach with proven success in both the NFL and college football,” Bielema said in a statement. “Our program will benefit immediately from his experience as a running backs coach and head coach. He has been an outstanding player and coach in the Big Ten and has developed some of the top running backs in football. We are excited to welcome Coach Wheatley to Champaign.”
Wheatley has worked with some of the best running backs in the NFL in recent years, and he’ll have some talent to work with in 2026, despite Kaden Feagin moving to tight end this offseason.
