"Is a Coaching Shake-Up on the Horizon? Urban Meyer Hints at Possible High-Profile Firing in College Football!"

As the college football landscape evolves, the pressure cooker that is Alabama football continues to simmer. Urban Meyer—an authority on navigating high-stakes coaching jobs—has some insight into the formidable challenge facing Kalen DeBoer. Stepping into the shoes of the iconic Nick Saban is no small feat, especially after a first season that saw the Crimson Tide finish 9-4, marking a jarring departure from the program’s storied history. With Las Vegas setting Alabama’s over/under win total for 2025 at a tantalizing 9.5, the clock is ticking. Meyer isn’t shy about sharing his thoughts, suggesting that while he believes DeBoer’s squad can bounce back, the implications of failing to meet expectations could be dire. So, what exactly happens if Alabama falls short once again? A coaching carousel or simply a tense sideline? Buckle up—because this season is poised to be a standout. LEARN MORE

Urban Meyer certainly understands what it’s like to coach at a school with high expectations.

It’s no surprise then that Meyer understands what Kalen DeBoer is going through at Alabama. In his first season replacing the legendary Nick Saban, DeBoer went 9-4 overall. It was the first time the Crimson Tide lost three SEC games in one season since 2010 and the program’s most losses in a single year since going 7-6 in 2007.

For 2025, Las Vegas oddsmakers have set Alabama’s over/under win total at 9.5. On “The Triple Option” podcast with colleagues Rob Stone and Mark Ingram, Meyer said he believes DeBoer’s team will eclipse that number.

However, if they don’t, the 50-year-old coach’s seat could get mighty warm.

“I think they’ll win over 9.5. Or win double-digit games,” Meyer said, via On3. “The question I have: What happens if they don’t? Will they pull the plug? Is that the kind of school — you know, Ohio State and Florida… Florida’s in a different place now, but there was a time where if you weren’t in that double-digit, it was out. At Ohio State I would imagine that coach (Ryan) Day has bought a little time. Obviously, my God, what are we talking about?

“But as much as I think it’s neat to talk about will it be 9.5, I don’t care. What does Alabama do if they don’t hit it?”

Meyer didn’t flat out say DeBoer would be canned, but he didn’t say it wasn’t possible either.

Ingram, who played for Saban and won a national title and Heisman Trophy for the Crimson Tide, said he leans toward DeBoer getting a third year regardless.

However, given how his first season finished up, a disappointing second campaign might be disastrous.

“I know that seat is going to be extremely warm going towards hot,” the former Heisman Trophy winner said. “So I think he has three years to be able to turn this thing around and get it back going where everyone is happy. But it’s tough, man. It depends on what the second year looks like. It’s a big season.”
