The 2025 college football season is still several months away, but the University of Michigan is making headlines this week due to a controversial decision made this week.Â
Michigan announced that it’s closing its Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. That’s just one of several changes being made to the university’s DEI programs. The school also revealed that its DEI 2.0 Strategic Plan has been discontinued.Â
“These decisions have not been made lightly,” Michigan said in an email. “We recognize the changes are significant and will be challenging for many of us, especially those whose lives and careers have been enriched by and dedicated to programs that are now pivoting.”Â
Apparently, the plan is to “shift resources to increase investments in student-facing programs.” While that may sound nice on paper, it’s very evident that people are furious with Michigan.Â
In fact, some fans believe student-athletes should boycott Michigan until its DEI programs are restored.Â
“Black athletes should boycott playing for Michigan until the initiatives are reinstated,” one person wrote on social media.Â
“All Black American athletes need to boycott and stop attending the University of Michigan,” a second person said.Â
“Black Athletes @UMich should not play,” another person tweeted. “Black recruits should not commit. The school has demonstrated what it thinks of you. We don’t have to consent to this nonsense.”
“Black athletes should refuse to play for ANY school who does this and watch how quickly it gets resolved,” a fourth person pointed out.
According to the email that Michigan sent out on Thursday, some students on campus didn’t felt like the DEI initiatives “fell short in fostering connections among diverse groups.”Â
Clearly, the public isn’t buying that explanation from Michigan. Most people are convinced the Big Ten school caved to President Donald Trump’s plan to erase DEI programs across the country. Â
