A college football quarterback has been suspended from his team after an arrest involving a stolen car.
According to reports, Tulane quarterback TJ Finley was arrested on charges related to the alleged theft of a car. Finley, who is at his fifth school in six college seasons, was booked for illegally possessing a stolen item worth more than $25,000. The Ponchatoula, Louisiana native told authorities he had just purchased the vehicle from Georgia.
Finley has since been released from custody. As of now, he is suspended from all Tulane team activities, the program announced earlier Thursday.
“We are aware of the situation involving TJ Finley,” Tulane said in a statement. “He has been suspended from the football program pending the outcome of the case. Due to federal laws governing student privacy, we will not disclose any additional information regarding the student, including information related to the disciplinary proceedings.”
Second-year head coach Jon Sumrall was asked about Finley’s situation this afternoon, but was unable to provide much information.
“Legally, I can’t, I’m not in a position to be able to dive into it,” Sumrall said. “You know, when things happen off the field, it’s unfortunate. And, I’ll let the statement say for what it is. But, when guys make mistakes, then we have to have accountability.”
Finley is entering his first season with the Green Wave after suiting up for Western Kentucky in 2024. A former three-star recruit, Finley played at Texas State in 2023 and Auburn in 2021-22.
The 6-foot-7, 238-pound signal caller began his college career at LSU in 2020. In 35 career games (27 starts) for four different programs, Finley has completed 62.9% of his passes for 6,128 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions.
His best season came with Texas State two years ago, when he started all 13 games for the Bobcats and passed for 3,439 yards, 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
