The college football transfer portal is heating up ahead of the start of spring football, but one recent transfer has landed in some legal trouble after arriving at his new school.
cccAccording to Fox 8 WVUE-TV in New Orleans, new Tulane quarterback TJ Finley was arrested on Thursday. The quarterback was arrested for charges pertaining to a stolen car, and has been released from jail.
Court documents show that Finley told police he bought the car in Georgia, but he was recently arrested for possession of an item with value exceeding $25,000.
Finley has previously played at Western Kentucky, Texas State, Auburn and LSU. The former three-star prospect and Louisiana native elected to stay close to home by initially joining the Tigers, but he’s attended several schools over the last few years.Â
Finley also drew interest from schools like Oregon and Alabama even as a three-star recruit, showing that he entered college with a great deal of potential.
The veteran quarterback has thrown for 6,128 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions in his college career, and he’ll look to earn the starting job at Tulane next year.
Finley has been a sporadic starter for most of his time in college, but he was able to start the entire season in 2023 for Texas State.Â
He led the Bobcats to an 8-5 record while posting career highs in yards and touchdowns. After transferring to Western Kentucky last year, Finley made only three starts.
Tulane went 9-5 last season in its first year under head coach Jon Sumrall. The Green Wave played for the American conference championship but lost that game to Navy. They would finish the season with another loss to Florida in the Gasparilla Bowl.
The college football landscape is changing by the year, and schools like Tulane are looking to find an advantage by bringing in under-the-radar talent like Finley. The Green Wave were extremely successful under former head coach Willie Fritz, who is now the head coach at Houston.
We’ll see what the future holds for Finley and the Tulane football program as they gear up for another season. For now, he’ll look to resolve the situation with the car as police continue to examine for any potential wrongdoing.
