Bill Belichick is back in football – just not where most people expected him to be.

The legendary New England Patriots head coach, who won six Super Bowls during his time with the franchise, is back in the game. However, he’s doing it at the college football level – not the pros. The legendary NFL head coach surprised many when he accepted the North Carolina Tar Heels job this offseason.

Belichick and Co. are trying to make North Carolina the “33rd” NFL franchise. First, though, he’ll just look to build the Tar Heels into an ACC contender and College Football Playoff hopeful.

The longtime football coach has made headlines for his off-the-field behavior in recent months, as he’s dating a 24-year-old former college cheerleader. However, that’s not the only off-the-field headline he’s made over the years.

The college football head coach has made it clear that he leans right, supporting President Trump.

In fact, Belichick actually sent a letter to President Trump, endorsing him back in 2016.

The former New York Giants assistant coach, who won two Super Bowls under Bill Parcells, praised Trump for his “tremendous campaign.” Unsurprisingly, he also took shots at the media for their “negative” and “slanted” coverage of Trump during his campaign.

Many doubted that Belichick’s letter was real, but it turned out that it very much was.

Belichick hasn’t refused for his endorsement of Trump back in 2016. However, he has stepped aside from his support – at least temporarily – after choosing to not attend a ceremony at the White House following the storming of the U.S. Capitol building on January 6.

The longtime NFL head coach said that democracy is what’s most important.

“Above all, I’m an American citizen with great reverence for our nation’s values, freedom and democracy,” he said.

He added: “One of the most rewarding things in my professional career took place in 2020 when, through the great leadership within our team, conversations about social justice, equality and human rights moved to the forefront and became actions. Continuing those efforts while remaining true to the people, team and country that I love outweigh the benefits of any individual award.”

It’ll be interesting to see how Belichick weighs his politics while working as a college football coach. There are surely plenty of college football coaches who support President Trump, though many of the sport’s players likely lean the other way.

North Carolina is scheduled to open the 2025 season on Sept. 1 against TCU.
