Just when you thought the NIL era of college football couldn’t get any crazier, Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava decides to pull a power move.

Iamaleava is coming off an impressive 2024 season with the Volunteers. He completed 63.8 percent of his passes for 2,616 yards with 19 touchdowns and five interceptions. As or right now, most analysts expect him to be a top-10 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Unfortunately for Tennessee, there’s no guarantee Iamaleava will be the school’s starting quarterback this fall.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the Volunteers didn’t have Iamaleava at spring practice this Friday because he’s holding out for a new contract.

No, we’re not kidding. We’ve officially reached the point where college athletes are holding out for new deals.

“Tennessee QB Nico Iamaleava did not attend Tennessee spring practice today. He’s been in conversations with Tennessee about a new contract,” Thamel said. “The no-show of practice came as a surprise.”

Pete Nakos of On3 reported earlier this week that Iamaleava is in active contract negotiations with Tennessee.

Iamaleava’s father ended up firing back at that report from On3.

“More games being played off the field than on the field,” Nic Iamaleava wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “… Nakos from @On3sports called and asked me directly, I told him I had no idea on what he’s talking about. He said his “close source” that he trusts with his life from the University of Tennessee staff gave him this information. So y’all can ask them what’s going on, cuz it ain’t from us!”

It’ll be interesting to see how this situation plays out for Iamaleava and the Volunteers.
