“Ryan Day’s Candid Admission: Which Critical Position Group is Ohio State’s Achilles’ Heel After the Spring Game?”
As the spring sun warmed the fields of Columbus this past weekend, excitement buzzed around the Ohio State Buckeyes during their annual spring game. With their eyes set firmly on defending their national title, head coach Ryan Day is far from complacent. There’s a lot to like about the Ohio State Buckeyes and their performance in their spring game this weekend, but head coach Ryan Day says he sees a hole the team desperately needs to fix before it can realistically defend its national title.
Speaking to reporters after the program’s exhibition, the Bucks HC was pleased overall but said there’s still a lot the school can improve on before their opener against Texas — especially with how inexperienced the roster is currently.
“The guys who have played football here, they’ve played football, but not as starters. … It’s a whole different deal,” Day explained, via Eleven Warriors. “… Every time you go out there, you’re either remembering our you’re learning. We have a lot of guys learning right now.”
That was the case for OSU’s defensive line, which Day says had it’s issues against the offense in the trenches. Admitting, “there was a lot of knockback” before adding “I think we’ve gotta take a hard look at it,” when it comes to adding pass rush depth in the transfer portal.
With that said though, the coach really loved what he saw from underclassman Logan George who made some noise off the edge on Saturday.
“We’ve gotta figure out how we can best utilize Logan this fall,” Day shared. “… He has heavy hands. … We’ll see how that fits and I think we need to figure out how his role is going to be described to him.”
All in all, it was a good Saturday for the Buckeyes. And new defensive coordinator Matt Patricia was able to introduce a lot of his new scheme.
“We put a lot in,” Day concluded. “… We’ve been seeing a lot of defenses, today we did not do that. … If we’re good and dominant, we should be able to play a couple defenses, play a couple coverages at Ohio State and win.”
