Kirk Herbstreit has made it clear where he stands on religion in the year of 2025.

The former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback has faced some adversity over the past year-plus. Herbstreit, who covers college football for ESPN and the NFL for Amazon Prime, teared up in the broadcasting booth following Ohio State’s College Football Playoff national title game win over Notre Dame. The Ohio native admitted that he got emotional because of his family.

Herbstreit lost his beloved dog, Ben, last year. His wife, Alison Herbstreit, battled breast cancer.

“I haven’t really talked about this publicly, but Ali my wife faced some stuff. It’s been a tough year for me behind the scenes,” Herbstreit said on Tuesday’s Pat McAfee Show.

“My wife got diagnosed with breast cancer, Ben dies, it was just a lot of emotion. And when you do what we do, you endure. You do your job. And I think what happened, I couldn’t predict it, but when they won … it was like almost, I don’t know, maybe a release of all that pent-up stuff. And it just got the best of me. I’m an emotional guy in general and when things touch my heart, I’m not good at talking when that happens.”

Herbstreit has previously admitted to his thoughts on religion and how he faces tough times.

Herbstreit, who is Christian, says that his faith is “everything.”

“Everything,” he said while appearing on the “What’s Next?” podcast, hosted by former NFL player Eric Wood. “I try to every day walk that path.”

Herbstreit goes to weekly Bible study, in a group of men in Nashville, Tennessee. He said that he sees a difference in his life when he’s spending time with fellow Christians.

“I just feel so good when I get a chance to do that,” he said. “And I’m not just saying this to say this, but I feel like when I’m praying and I’m with my Bible study group, things just seem to be more balanced. I’m more patient. I’m more outgoing.”

Herbstreit, 55, often takes to social media to talk about his faith and cite Bible verses.

Herbstreit, who says he’s an introvert, says that his faith helps him feel more connected to the world.

“I’m an introvert by nature, so I tend to kind of lock down and hold everything in, whether it’s frustration, or it’s pain, or it’s happiness,” Herbstreit said. “I’ll kind of lock down and I find when I’m in a good spot with my faith, that stuff seems to kind of just let go a little bit for me.”
