Tragedy Strikes: Shocking Details Emerge in Fatal Big Ten Mascot Incident
Mascots—often the heart and soul of college sports—rarely make headlines for anything beyond crowd hype and halftime antics. But this week, Purdue’s beloved Boilermaker Special, a Victorian-era train masquerading as a mascot and tearing up the road at speeds up to 75 MPH, found itself at the center of a tragic incident. How often do you hear about a mascot making a multi-vehicle accident fatal? It’s a sobering reminder that even the most iconic and seemingly invincible symbols of school spirit aren’t immune to life’s unpredictabilities. As we piece together the heartbreaking details, including the suspected tire malfunction that turned the Boilermaker Special into a deadly hazard, my thoughts are with the victim’s family and the Purdue community. Who could’ve imagined that a mascot train—normally such a fixture of fun—would become the subject of a tragic investigation this season?
One person is dead in a fatal accident involving a Big Ten university mascot this week.
The Big Ten is home to some of the coolest mascots in the country. Purdue, which goes by the Boilermakers, is known for its mascot train. The Purdue Boilermaker Special is the official mascot of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. It’s modeled after a Victorian-era railroad locomotive.
The train is driven to every away football game and other major sporting events. It can get up to 75 MPH on the road.
Tragically, the Big Ten university mascot was involved in a fatal accident earlier this week.
On Thursday, April 24, the Boilermaker Special vehicle was traveling on U.S. 52 at Wyandotte Road in southeastern Tippecanoe County. It collided with a car, killing one person.
The driver of the vehicle was killed, while two other passengers were transported to the hospital.
Purdue University confirmed the news.
“We can confirm our Boilermaker Special was involved in a serious multi-vehicle accident in Tippecanoe County on April 24,” Purdue University said in a statement.
“Our thoughts are with all those impacted by the incident,” the school continued, adding that “the two students who were on the Special have been treated and released from the hospital.”
The Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office believes the accident was caused by a tire malfunction. It’s believed that the tire malfunction caused the vehicle to cross the median and collide with a passenger vehicle that was traveling in the other direction.
“The Sheriff’s Office is continuing with our investigation into any additional mechanical issues that may be related to the crash,” the TCSO said in a statement shared with ABC News.
Our thoughts are with the friends and family members of the victim on Sunday.
May they rest in peace.
