Nick Saban and Donald Trump Team Up? College Football Fans Are Shocked and Divided Over Unexpected Announcement
When legend Nick Saban steps out of the locker room and into the spotlight alongside President Donald Trump at Alabama’s upcoming commencement ceremony, you can bet the rumor mill will spin faster than a kickoff return. Is it a heartfelt farewell from a coaching giant to the class of 2025—or a headline-grabbing plunge into the murky waters where sports and politics collide? Saban, freshly retired since January 2024, isn’t exactly known for political grandstanding, so this move feels less like a pivot and more like a personal nod to his players and the university he’s long embodied. Still, the backlash is swift and sharp—some fans crying “mixing sports with politics” and others ready to cancel their season tickets in protest. But here’s a thought: could supporting your alma mater’s graduates and sharing the stage with a former president really be that scandalous? In a world where coaches often move from NFL sidelines to college fields, this is just another chapter worth unpacking before the ceremony kicks off Thursday evening at Coleman Coliseum. Curious how this all shakes out? LEARN MORE.
The University of Alabama made a special announcement this week that involves legend football coach Nick Saban and President Donald Trump.
Alabama is hosting a special commencement event at Coleman Coliseum this Thursday. It’ll feature an address from Trump, who confirmed last week that he’ll share some words of encouragement with the Crimson Tide’s graduating class.
Saban, who retired from coaching in January 2024, will also make a few comments at this Thursday’s event.
“The ceremony will celebrate the UA class of 2025 and feature an address from President Donald J. Trump along with comments from UA President Stuart R. Bell and Nick Saban, former coach of the Crimson Tide football team,” Alabama’s press release said.
Unsurprisingly, the reactions to this press release were pretty harsh.
Some fans are claiming they’re done with Saban because he’s “mixing sports with politics.” In reality though, he’s simply saying farewell to the class of 2025.
“Sure, why not,” one fan said in response to this news.
“Oh Nicholas, we are DONE,” a second fan declared.
“This is so sad to see,” a social media user wrote.
“My family is canceling all season tickets we have to several sports. Politics should be kept out of graduation ceremonies. Extremely disappointed in Coach Saban,” one person said.
“All that star power for a degree from Bama is crazy,” another fan commented.
“Joining him and being at the event are two different things. He has players graduating and he shows up to support them,” an Alabama fan pointed out.
While fans might be disappointed by this Thursday’s development, it seems unfair to blame Saban for supporting his school.
Besides, Saban has avoided politics for the majority of his coaching career. We doubt that he’ll go down that path anytime soon.
Alabama’s special commencement event will begin at 6:30 p.m.
