You Won’t Believe Which College Football Fan Base Just Earned the ‘Most Toxic’ Label—And Why It Matters
Ah, college football — the season’s approaching faster than a 90-yard kickoff return, and with it comes that familiar blend of anticipation and chaos that only fall Saturdays deliver. After an electrifying 2024 where Ohio State secured their place in history by winning the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff, one question lingers: what’s next for 2025? Hopeful for madness, mayhem, and of course, the relentless passion of fan bases that border on obsessive fervor.
Speaking of passion — or maybe a wee bit more than that — a recent study by Elite College Football took a deep dive into the question often left unasked: which college football fan base tops the charts in “toxicity”? Spoiler alert: Ohio State reigns supreme with a perfect 10.0 score, sealing their crown not just on the field, but in the hearts (and inboxes) of every rival fan who’s endured their unyielding energy — and occasional lunacy.
Is their devotion a superpower or a curse? ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit certainly thinks the “lunatic fringe” at Ohio State wields an influence like no other—part inspiring, part terrifying. So, as the 2025 season looms with national-title ironies and locker room drama, just remember: some of the fiercest fandom might come with a side of “you’re crazy if you think they’ll accept anything less than a championship.” Ready to meet the most ‘toxic’ top 10? Buckle up — it’s going to be a wild ride. College football season will be here before you know it. Spring football has wrapped up, summer is close and soon enough, teams will be reporting for fall camp. It was certainly an eventful 2024 season, with Ohio State winning the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff. What will 2025 bring? Hopefully, more craziness. You know that college football’s top fan bases will be bringing the heat throughout the 2025 season. From Alabama to Georgia to Texas to Ohio State, some of the country’s biggest programs are facing national title-or-bust expectations heading into the fall. But which college football program is the most “toxic” of them all in 2025? Elite College Football conducted a study, ranking the most “toxic” fan bases in the country. Ohio State, the defending national champions, came in at No. 1 in the rankings. The Buckeyes had a perfect toxicity score of 10.0 out of 10.0. Here’s the complete Top 10: Ohio State fans don’t seem to be too bothered by the rankings. The Buckeyes are coming off a national championship, after all. “A perfect 10.0 rating. Hang the banner!!!!! I’m serious — I want this banner unveiled directly next to the National Champions one. Because the thing that the Kirk Herbstreits of the world don’t understand is that the Lunatic Fringe willed the Buckeyes to a title this year. Do you know what happens the day this fan base accepts complacency? 7-5,” one fan wrote. “Hate us because you ain’t us,” one fan added. “Best Damn Fans in the Land,” one fan added. “Michigan fan definitely made this 😆,” one fan added. “Ohio state fans are un-bearable 😂😂😂,” one fan added. ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit has made it clear that he’s not a fan of the “lunatic fringe” portion of Ohio State’s fan base, either. “The lunatic fringe at Ohio State is as powerful as anywhere in the country. It used to be eight to 10, I think it’s grown now to about 15 to 20. I’m sure they’ll be happy tonight, fired up about what the team did, but God forbid they lose to Oregon. They’ll want to fire [Day] again,” Herbstreit said during the College Football Playoff. “First Take tried to fire him. They thought he was done, so I’ll be excited to see what they talk about on Monday after this performance. They had him out, trying to find replacements. But here he is, he still has his hat on. He’s still coaching.” Toxic or not, Ohio State clearly has one of the best fan bases in the country – and best programs.
