Urban Meyer Drops Unexpected Bombshell on Michigan’s National Title Fate—What He Really Thinks Will Shock You

You ever wonder how much weight a tarnished trophy really carries? Michigan’s 2023 national championship is currently swimming in murky waters thanks to the Connor Stalions sign-stealing scandal—and with head coach Sherrone Moore’s suspension looming in 2025, the questions flying around aren’t exactly light. Enter Urban Meyer, who’s been on the opposite sideline seven times against Michigan without a single loss. The former Ohio State head coach doesn’t just dismiss the controversy; he outright finds the idea of vacating wins, especially from years gone by, pretty laughable. But while Meyer draws a hard line against dishonesty with the NCAA, he urges patience, waiting for the full story to unfold before anyone starts rewriting history. So, is Michigan’s title safe from being wiped off the books? Or are we just fooling ourselves hoping sports scandals stay in the past? Let’s unpack Meyer’s take on all this. LEARN MORE.

Urban Meyer has weighed in on whether or not Michigan’s 2023 college football national championship should be vacated.

The former Ohio State Buckeyes head coach went 7-0 against Michigan. He led the Buckeyes program from 2012-18. Ryan Day took over for Meyer in 2019 and has lost four straight games to the Wolverines, despite winning a national title this past season.

Michigan has been embroiled in controversy, due to the Connor Stalions sign-stealing scandal, and the Wolverines announced this week that head coach Sherrone Moore was being suspended for two games in 2025.

But should Michigan’s 2023 national championship be vacated? Meyer weighed in.

Meyer does not believe that Michigan’s 2023 national championship should be vacated.

However, he does believe that anyone who lies to the NCAA should be banned from the sport.

“Yeah, I’ve been blown up all morning about that,” Meyer said on “The Triple Option” podcast. “I say pump the brakes. Don’t even go there. When you start seeing about coaches that can’t coach, you know, you went through this, and you see the word show-cause, show-cause, in my understanding, means you can’t coach. If someone wants to hire you, you’re not allowed to coach. So, obviously there’s some stuff there, but once again I defer until everything comes out, and I hope it does. I hope everything comes out. And so at some point you can move past this because this is like a black cloud that’s been hanging for a while.”

Meyer finds the idea of vacating wins or titles laughable.

“Everyone starts laughing,” Meyer said. “Vacate what wins? Seven years ago, six years ago, four years ago. You know, that has no impact on, you know, that’s the risk-reward. You can vacate all the wins you want. Now, obviously this discussion will come up. You know, you start vacating wins from a national championship season, that’s a problem.

“But I think Tennessee had some wins vacated, if I remember, right, maybe Arizona State, the teams weren’t very good. So who cares? The risk-reward is in full effect there. That means there’s no risk and a great reward, I guess, if you do the things they’re doing. So you hear the word vacated wins, everybody rolls their eyes in college sports.”
