Bill Belichick hasn’t even coached a single game for North Carolina, and yet, there’s already chatter about the two sides going their separate ways. 

Earlier this week, former ESPN host Pablo Torre reported that North Carolina banned Belichick’s girlfriend Jordon Hudson from visiting their facilities. This came on the heels of Hudson shutting down a question during Belichick’s wide-ranging interview with CBS News. 

UNC tried to shut down this rumor by saying Hudson is “welcome to the Carolina Football facilities.” However, that only led to Torre doubling down on his reporting. 

“P.S. UNC can now choose to describe or change its position on Jordon Hudson’s involvement however it wishes, following the publication of our episode. We requested comment and filed dozens of FOIA requests that were not satisfied. And we stand by the specific reporting in our episode, which came from the highest levels of the football program,” Torre wrote.

Even though Belichick hasn’t commented on this matter, it sounds like things are getting pretty tense behind the scenes. If that’s true, June 1 should be a date circled on every UNC fan’s calendar. 

On June 1, Belichick’s buyout shrinks from $10 million to $1 million. If the Super Bowl-winning coach doesn’t feel like he’s getting along with North Carolina’s decision-makers, he could leave Chapel Hill at a much lower cost. 

“Initially, that reduction was viewed as a quick and easy path for Belichick to get back to the NFL. Now, it becomes Belichick’s potential escape hatch from what may have become a bad relationship,” Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk wrote. “Setting aside whatever cracks in the foundation may have previously existed, Friday could be the day when it all came crashing down. Pablo Torre’s reporting, which basically stands for the idea that Belichick was told his 24-year-old girlfriend can’t work for the football program any longer, could be the thing that gets her to do something like what she reportedly did at his recent CBS interview.” 

Belichick is currently signed to a five-year deal. When he agreed to terms with UNC, he said coaching college football was always a dream of his. 

“I grew up around college football with my dad and treasured those times,” Belichick said. “I have always wanted to coach in college and now I look forward to building the football program in Chapel Hill.”

If Belichick leaves North Carolina before ever coaching a game, that would leave a stain on his legacy. Not even his biggest supporters can deny that fact.
