Adam Schefter Drops Shocking Insider Scoop on Brock Purdy’s Future—What Fans Didn’t See Coming

So, here we are again, wondering if Brock Purdy’s sideline sojourn is about to wrap up sooner than the 49ers feared. Mac Jones is minding the store this Sunday while Purdy nurses that bothersome shoulder and turf toe—ouch, right? But ESPN’s Adam Schefter dropped a nugget that’s got me pondering: could the “Mr. Irrelevant” turned franchise centerpiece make a swift return, or is patience still the better part of valor here? The stakes are sky-high, not just because Purdy’s no longer the underdog story but because he’s now got a hefty contract and expectations towering over him. Meanwhile, Mac’s steady presence poses that classic quarterback dilemma—do you rush Purdy back or let Jones prove he can hold the reins without a mutiny? It’s the kind of gridiron puzzle that keeps us glued to the sidelines, biting our nails, and questioning whether the 49ers’ future is all in or playing it safe—because in football, as in life, timing is everything.

The San Francisco 49ers won’t have Brock Purdy out there on Sunday.

Instead, Mac Jones will take the reins of the offense while Purdy recovers from a shoulder and turf toe injury.

However, according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, he may not be out for much longer:

“49ers are not optimistic Brock Purdy will return from his toe injury for a Week 3 matchup vs. Arizona, but it’s not out of the question and he has improved. ‘We’ll see for next week,’ one source said about Purdy. ‘Next week will be tight, but he progressed a lot this week,’” Schefter posted on X.

Initial reports claimed that Purdy was looking at at least two weeks on the shelf, so this is good news.

His initial recovery timeline was set from two to five weeks.

Of course, this might also depend on whether Mac Jones fares well in his absence.

If he holds his ground and performs like he’s supposed to, there should be no rush to bring him back on the field.

That’s not to say that he’s in jeopardy of losing his starting spot, not after securing that big-money contract in the offseason.

But even though he clearly didn’t live up to the expectations and might not be much more than a backup, Mac Jones still has plenty of experience as a starter, and they could do a whole lot worse right now.

There has been a lot said about Purdy and whether he’s the quarterback this franchise needs.

He’s no longer on a bargain contract, and he’s no longer a feel-good story like he was in the earlier stages of his career.

Expectations and demands have never been this steep for the former Mr. Irrelevant, and as such, he needs to make sure to be back to full strength before getting back out there.
