Adam Silver Drops Cryptic Tease: Could NBA Playoffs Be About to Change Forever?

Picture this: the 2025 NBA Finals, the tension electric, the stakes sky-high—and suddenly, a top European team crashes the party. Sounds like a wild fantasy? Well, Adam Silver is making it a real possibility. The NBA commissioner is mapping out plans to blend the NBA and a European league into one exhilarating, globe-trotting basketball spectacle. Could we soon witness playoff matchups where the Knicks duke it out with London’s finest, with travel across the Atlantic part of the postseason grind? It’s an audacious vision that’s shaking the old playbook and stirring up a whole new world of hoops drama. As someone who’s been in the trenches watching this league evolve, I gotta say—this idea isn’t just bold; it’s downright thrilling.

Recent reports have said that Adam Silver has been creating plans for a European basketball league that would work in tandem with the NBA.

He has been public about this, but revealed more details about what he envisioned this week.

Silver said that NBA teams could face off against NBA European teams, even in the high-stakes heat of the playoffs.

“You possibly could see teams coming into our playoffs, top seeds from other leagues… When I think of the flight from New York to LA for example, there’s no reason if we had four teams in Europe, you couldn’t travel, play the Knicks or Nets, travel to London, play three, four times in Europe, come back home. So I think it’s very doable in our league,” Silver said.

This is yet another sign that Silver is taking this idea very seriously.

In fact, it seems like it’s climbed to the top of the list for the NBA’s future plans.

For a while, it seemed like the league was laser-focused on adding expansion teams in the US.

That is still a priority for them, but opening a European league seems to be even more important, with many reports saying it could tip off in 2027 or 2028.

Traveling from America to Europe would be tiring, but Silver doesn’t feel that it’s a huge deal and imagines teams flying across the Atlantic during the postseason.

Silver said he pictures top seeds from overseas coming to the States to compete as the playoffs heat up, but he didn’t reveal intricate details about how it would work.

There is obviously still a lot to work out, and Silver is just kicking around ideas right now.

But there is no doubt that this dream is becoming a reality, and plans about the NBA in Europe are developing quickly.
