Just look at this past season, Georgia lost to Ole Miss in the quarterfinals of the playoff after beating Ole Miss during the regular season and winning the SEC. Georgia had no notable advantage (no homefield, both teams had plenty of rest) against Ole Miss. The game was even played at the Sugar Bowl, which is closer to Ole Miss’ campus than Georgia’s.
Byrne joins Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte in wanting to drop the SEC championship. Those are two powerful voices within the SEC. Byrne wants the playoff to expand to 16 teams and not have conference championships. He wants the playoff to start and end sooner.
