Auburn vs. Georgia: Clash of Titans Set to Rewrite College Football History

Here we go—another Saturday, another showdown. The Auburn Tigers, sitting at 3-2 and nursing a two-game conference slump, are gearing up for a fierce bout with the undefeated (well, almost) Georgia Bulldogs, who boast a 4-1 record and a No. 9 spot in the US LBM Coaches Poll. Hugh Freeze’s crew could really use a win to shake off those early-season blues, but facing off against Kirby Smart’s squad fresh off a dominant win over Kentucky? That’s a tall order. Auburn’s quarterback, Jackson Arnold, has seen his early-season spark dim somewhat in SEC play, while Georgia’s Gunner Stockton may not be lighting it up in the air but is making noise on the ground. With experts calling this a tight battle but leaning just slightly toward Georgia, the real question: Can Auburn’s home-field grit and defensive tenacity pull off the upset? Let’s dig into the numbers and narratives to see who’s got the edge when the rivalry fireworks fly at Jordan-Hare Stadium. LEARN MORE

The Auburn Tigers (3-2) enter Saturday hoping to end a two-game losing skid that has plagued Hugh Freeze’s team to start the conference season. Unfortunately, ending the all-too-familiar losing streak will be a difficult ask against a highly-ranked Georgia Bulldogs (4-1) that enters this rivalry clash ranked No. 9 in the US LBM Coaches Poll.

Jackson Arnold and the Auburn Tigers enjoyed a much-needed idle week on the Plains after losing a pair of games to Texas A&M and Oklahoma to start off the SEC season, while Georgia rolls into Auburn fresh off a 35-14 spanking of Kentucky a week ago. The win was large on both the scoreboard and in morale, especially after Kirby Smart’s team suffered another brutal loss against Alabama a week before.

Despite these rivals trending in polar opposite directions in both the record column and the confidence around the locker room, experts are predicting a fairly close battle at Jordan-Hare Stadium this weekend. Sportsbooks currently label the Bulldogs as slight favorites, with Georgia holding a 3.5-point spread advantage on BetMGM. ESPN FPI also has the No. 9 ranked team in the country as the favorites, with their FPI model giving Georgia a 64.5% chance to claim a road victory.

Will a deeper dive into the tale of the tape show Auburn should be the favorite in front of the home crowd on Saturday, or is Georgia the clear better team? As always, we’ll start with the quarterbacks.

After vaulting himself into the dark horse Heisman Trophy conversation with a fantastic performance against Baylor and solid showings in back-to-back games against lesser competition to open the season, Auburn quarterback Jackson Arnold has taken a major step back so far in the conference campaign. The junior has over 1,000 total yards and 10 total touchdowns on the season as a whole, but has thrown for just 345 yards and 1 touchdown in two conference games.

Arnold’s legs, which were a huge weapon early on, have become a non-factor as well, as sacks and small pockets have led to 0 rushing yards combined against Texas A&M and Oklahoma. On the other side, Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton has also struggled through the air so far in the SEC season (628 yards in 3 games) but has been able to use his ground game to help his offense function fairly well. Stockton ran for a pair of scores and 48 yards last week while also rushing for 22 against Alabama and 38 with a touchdown against Tennessee, leading to 666 total yards and 5 total touchdowns for the junior in two conference contests.

While Stockton hasn’t been super impressive, his offense has functioned extremely better than the Jackson Arnold-led Auburn offense has, giving him the slight edge in this category.

As for the rest of the offense, Georgia also holds an advantage. The Bulldogs offensive line is not elite by any means, but the Bulldogs have allowed just 6 total sacks in 5 games this season. Comparatively, Auburn’s offensive front has seen Jackson Arnold get swallowed by opposing pass rushers 14 times in two SEC games.

The Tigers are much closer in the talent department when it comes to the skill positions, and while Cam Coleman and Eric Singleton Jr. may be the best pass catchers on the field Saturday, Georgia’s quartet of playmakers in Colbie Young, Zachariah Branch, Nate Frazier, and Chauncey Bowens help Georgia hold onto yet another advantage.

Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs hold the edge throughout the offensive side of the football, but Auburn does get the advantage on defense, although that is mainly due to the home field advantage. After a suspect start to the season, Auburn’s defense has locked in over the past two weeks, allowing just 40 points in two road SEC games. A crucial turnover provided the lone offensive spark for Auburn two weeks ago, and the Tigers will need at least one, but more likely two, quick changes of possesion if they hope to pull off a win on Saturday.

After taking a look at the tale of the tape, the line and implied odds seem to make sense. Georgia should win this game on paper, but the Jordan-Hare crowd and a desperate Auburn squad won’t make it easy for the Bulldogs.
