There were bound to be some hiccups as Bill Belichick began putting his stamp on the North Carolina football program and he may have just had his biggest one today.

According to The Juice Online, 2026 quarterback Zaid Lott has flipped his commitment from North Carolina to Syracuse, turning him from one of Belichick’s presumptive allies to a potential foe in 2026 and beyond.

247Sports rates Lott as a three-star recruit and the No. 890 player in the Class of 2026. He was the No. 60 quarterback in the nation and the No. 38 player from the state of North Carolina.

“I am forever grateful to finally say that I am officially HOME,” Lott wrote on X today.

The Juice Online also noted that Lott was weighing offers from a slew of ACC powerhouses including Boston College, Florida State, North Carolina State and Virginia Tech.

“I chose Syracuse because they’re building something great,” Lott told The Juice Online. “I want to be a part of it.”

Syracuse fans on X were understandably thrilled to have the young signal caller joining their team. He’s the first quarterback to join Fran Brown’s 2026 recruiting class.

“This coaching staff will treat you the way you deserve to be treated. They value all of their players and look to treat them accordingly! Welcome to the family,” one user wrote.

“Welcome to the cuse can’t wait for you to come join!” wrote another.

“Welcome to the Orange!” a third wrote.

As for the Tar Heels, it’s a pretty unfortunate coup as he was one of the best in-state players, let alone in-state quarterbacks, that were available in 2026.

Lott’s commitment change also leaves the North Carolina 2026 recruiting class without a quarterback. Belichick will have to get back on the road in order to find a replacement.

That is, of course, assuming that he’s intent on coaching North Carolina in 2026…
