Brian Baldinger Reveals Surprising MVP Contender That Could Shake Up the NFL Season

Brian Baldinger tossing out the MVP question for Jalen Hurts certainly caught my eye—and not just because Baldy’s never shy about stirring the pot. The Eagles just sent the Giants packing with a spanking 9-0 vibe, and Hurts has been slicing through defenses like a hot knife through butter lately, with an almost unreal stat line for the past couple of weeks. But here’s the kicker: does a couple of electric performances really vault a guy into MVP territory? I’m torn. On one hand, Hurts has been the sparkplug Philly’s offense desperately needed; on the other, the overall show has been a mixed bag, with some baffling decisions and a supporting cast that’s still figuring itself out. So, can Hurts graduate from “playmaker” to “most valuable” in the eyes of the league—and us? It’s a head-scratcher that’s got me quarantining my excitement just a bit.

The Philadelphia Eagles made a big statement in Week 8.

They defeated the New York Giants handily and looked like a legitimate Super Bowl contender again.

Notably, a lot of that had to do with quarterback Jalen Hurts, who was efficient and put up points.

With that in mind, NFL analyst Brian Baldinger wondered whether Hurts should be an NFL MVP candidate.

“Eagles [Jalen Hurts] has 9 incompletions and 7 TD passes in last 2 weeks. MVP?” Baldinger wrote on X.

Of course, those numbers are impressive, but that doesn’t mean that he should be an MVP candidate.

The Eagles’ offense has been pedestrian at best for most of the season, and Hurts has failed to make some easy throws when his first read isn’t available.

He isn’t called on to carry the offense when running back Saquon Barkley is at his best, but he did throw four TD passes against the Giants despite generating only 179 yards through the air.

Also, the fact that the Eagles’ offense looked much better without A.J. Brown on the field also raised some questions about whether they should move on from the wide receiver, given that Hurts has been either unwilling or unable to target him more often than not.

Whatever the case, Hurts deserves credit for what the Eagles have done in winning six of eight games this season.

From that to being an MVP candidate, that’s another story.

He hasn’t had a better season than Drake Maye, Patrick Mahomes or Jonathan Taylor, and he’ll have to do much more than that to enter the race.
