Bubba Chandler’s Electric MLB Debut: 100.4 MPH Fireball and Unbelievable 4-Inning Save Stun Pirates Fans

Friday night marked a milestone in baseball — Bubba Chandler, arguably the finest pitching prospect in the game today, stepped onto the MLB mound for his debut… in relief. And if you thought he’d just warm the seat, think again. Stepping in during the sixth inning against the struggling Colorado Rockies, Chandler unleashed fire over four dominant frames, yielding a mere two hits and fanning three hitters while dialing his heater up to an eye-popping 100.4 mph. Not too shabby for your first MLB encore, right?

The Pirates’ shutout rout, bolstered by Braxton Ashcraft’s five innings of near-perfection, had fans buzzing — and Chandler’s save? It’s the kind of debut save that’s rarer than a comet sighting. Only three players since 1969 have pulled off four-inning saves in their first outing, and Chandler’s the first to do it run-free. This feat also etched his name as the first Pirate ever to notch a save in a debut. Talk about making history!

Ranked seventh in all of baseball by MLB Pipeline and sitting just behind Konnor Griffin in Pittsburgh’s system, Chandler’s arrival has been eagerly awaited. While the club envisions him as a future starter, they wisely eased him in as a reliever — a gentle introduction to the big leagues. But if the fireballer keeps this pace? We might just see him leading the rotation before the season wraps up, joining forces with fellow top prospect Paul Skenes.

Bubba Chandler, the top pitching prospect in baseball, made his MLB debut on Friday as a reliever. He made the most of the role.

The Pittsburgh Pirates flame-thrower entered the game in sixth inning against the Colorado Rockies and proceeded to mow down MLB’s worst team for the next four innings, allowing only two hits while striking out three.

His fastball topped out at 100.4 mph in a 9-0 Pirates win, which also saw starter Braxton Ashcraft allow only one hit in five scoreless innings.

The effort added up to a four-inning save for Chandler, which puts him in some rare company. He’s only the fourth player in the history of the save stat (which was officially recognized in 1969) to post a four-inning save in his debut and the first to do it while allowing no runs.

He’s also the first Pirate to ever post a save in his debut.

MLB Pipeline ranks Chandler as the No. 7 prospect in all of baseball and the second-best in the Pirates’ system, behind only No. 1 prospect Konnor Griffin. Fans have waited for months for him to join the MLB team, and they’ll have to wait even longer to see him join a rotation led by another former top pitching prospect, Paul Skenes.
