Can the Lions’ Explosive Offense Make History This Season?
So, the Detroit Lions lost two of their top assistant coaches during the offseason, and right off the bat in Week 1, their offense seemed like a ship lost at sea—struggling, sputtering, and making fans wonder if they really could thrive without former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. But fast forward a few weeks, and suddenly it’s like someone flipped a switch. John Morton stepped in and the offense is firing on all cylinders, leading the NFL in scoring—again! Seriously, when was the last time a team led the league in scoring two seasons in a row? Since the 2008-09 Saints, believe it or not. It’s got me thinking: can the Lions keep this magic alive and go from hot start to historic dynasty? Whatever happens, they’re showing that losing key coaches doesn’t have to mean losing their identity—or their punch. This team is proving championship calibre might just be in their DNA after all.

The Detroit Lions lost their top two assistant coaches in the offseason.
And after watching their offense struggle to get anything going in Week 1, a lot was said about how much they missed their former offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson.
Fast forward to today, and that no longer seems to be the case.
John Morton has done an outstanding job as his replacement, and it’s business as usual for Dan Campbell’s team:
“So much for the Lions missing Ben Johnson: they lead the NFL in scoring offense this season (34.3). They led the NFL in scoring offense last season (30.8). No team has led the NFL in scoring offense in back-to-back seasons since the 2008-09 Saints,” Wingo posted on X.

It seemed like it was just a matter of time before this team found its groove again, and it didn’t take long.
They have one of the most stacked offenses in the game, and it was just a matter of establishing the run and getting some of Johnson’s signature trickery going.
The Lions didn’t look like a Super Bowl contender in the first game of the season.
And given Coach Campbell’s long history of reckless decisions, it seemed like he was going to have a tough time getting the team back to its usual ways without Johnson and Aaron Glenn.
Fortunately for the team, they’ve found just the perfect replacements, as Kelvin Sheppard has also made this defense look aggressive and sharp.
At the end of the day, it’s very difficult to think of this team as anything less than a championship-caliber team.
And even though Coach Johnson clearly deserved a lot of credit for everything he did during his days with the team, it was also a collective effort, and the Lions are still an offensive force.
