Chargers' OC Spot Heats Up: Inside the High-Stakes Interview with QBs Coach Shane Day

When the Chargers announced they had wrapped up their chat with Shane Day for the offensive coordinator gig, it caught my eye — and not just because Day’s carved out a pretty intriguing career path. You see, he’s never actually held the OC title, yet here he is, bringing heaps of experience from quarterback coaching stints with the Bears, 49ers, and, yes, the Chargers themselves across multiple seasons. Plus, the man’s worked closely with some big names like Jay Cutler, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Justin Herbert—talk about pedigree! Not to mention, he’s worn hats coaching offensive line and tight ends, rounding out his skillset quite nicely. Oh, and in 2023, he took a senior offensive assistant role with the Texans—so he’s no stranger to adapting and learning on the fly. Meanwhile, Marcus Brady’s also been in the mix for interviews, so the Chargers clearly aren’t settling for anything less than sharp minds to steer their offense forward. It’s a fascinating crossroads for the team, and I can’t wait to see where they land. LEARN MORE

Day has had a long career in the NFL, but he has never been an offensive coordinator. He was quarterbacks coach for the Bears (2010-11), 49ers (2019-20), Chargers (2021-22 and 2025). He doubled as the Chargers’ passing game coordinator in 2021-22.

He has coached Jay Cutler, Jimmy Garoppolo and Justin Herbert.

Day has also been an offensive line coach (Washington in 2014-15) and a tight ends coach (Miami in 2016-18).

In 2023, Day was senior offensive assistant for the Texans.
