The 10 Biggest Upsets In Men’s NCAA Tournament History (3:16)

For just the second time in school history, the Auburn Tigers men’s basketball team reached the NCAA Tournament’s Final Four. Unfortunately, it’s now the second time they’ve bowed out of the tournament at that stage too.

Auburn lost a nailbiter to SEC rival Florida in the Final Four today, falling 79-73 after leading by eight heading into the half. In the battle of SEC regular season champions versus SEC Tournament champions, the Tigers just couldn’t hold on in this one.

It was a heartbreaking loss for head coach Bruce Pearl and all-world forward Johni Broome. But after the game, they were greeted proudly by one of Auburn’s most famous alums.

Charles Barkley, who was on set to cover the game for CBS, showed true character as he gave hugs to both men as they came off the court.

Barkley helped lead Auburn on their first-ever SEC Tournament appearance all the way back in 1984 before embarking on his NBA career. Head coach Sonny Smith would would lead the team to the Sweet 16 the following year, and all the way to the Elite Eight the year after, but wouldn’t get back to the Sweet 16 again until 1999.

It wasn’t until Bruce Pearl arrived that Auburn really started to reassert itself as a force in college hoops. In 2019, he led the team to an SEC Tournament title and their first-ever Final Four appearance, only to lose to eventual national champion Virginia.

In the five tournaments prior to this one, the team couldn’t make it out of the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament.

It was Johni Broom’s emergence as SEC Player of the Year this season that really propelled Auburn to the top. He was their most dominant scorer all year and helped lead the team to the SEC regular season title.

But Broome’s dominance and Pearl’s coaching just weren’t enough to overcome Florida today.

Broome is now off to the NBA while Pearl has work to do on getting the team ready for next season.

Was this the best chance Auburn ever had at winning a national title?
