The Kansas City Chiefs, who have that look again as a Super Bowl team, will face the Buffalo Bills in Upstate New York on Sunday for Week 9’s game of the week.

Yahoo Sports’ Andrew Siciliano, Charles Robinson and Ben Fawkes broke down the matchup on the “Inside Coverage” podcast this week. Here were the top takeaways from the discussion:

What’s at stake for Bills?

For ultimate validation, the Bills (5-2) need to beat the Chiefs (5-3) in the postseason. So their four wins in the past five regular-season games against Patrick Mahomes and company don’t mean much in the grand scheme of things.

However, in this iteration of the “rivalry,” Buffalo needs to keep pace in the divisional race. In the first month of the season, it looked like it would cruise to the AFC East title. The rise of Drake Maye and the New England Patriots (6-2) changed that projection, putting the Bills in a dogfight for the East. They can’t afford to lose ground before a rematch with the Patriots in Foxborough on Dec. 14, especially with New England already having a victory at Buffalo under their belt.

Siciliano summed it up for the Buffalo faithful:

“I know a lot of Bills fans that will go, ‘Eh, OK, cool. Like it was worth the ride on Sunday. I had a good time. I’d rather have them win than lose, certainly. And maybe this factors when it comes to where this game is going to be played when they meet again [in the playoffs], but it’s going to ring real hollow. What stands out to me is that the Bills still have trouble stopping the run.”

Indeed, Buffalo has work to do against ground attacks. The Bills enter Week 9 giving up 150.3 yards per game, which is 31st in the league with only Cincinnati faring worse.

The trade deadline, which is Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET, matters for the Bills, and this matchup could further highlight what they need.

“I definitely think this game for the Bills in particular, they’re sitting there and they’ve been kicking around wide receiver options on the trade market trying to figure out can we find maybe a low end No. 1 who is a legit No. 1 like a Jakobi Meyers maybe from the Raiders,” Robinson said.

“And now with Ed Oliver, that injury, now they’re sitting there and going, do we need to go out and look for a defensive piece where we can plug somebody into that spot because that’s such a massive loss for them?”

What’s at stake for Chiefs?

Losing to Buffalo in the regular season isn’t new for KC. The Chiefs have lost the past four regular-season matchups against the Bills. It’s almost a cruel tease to Bills Mafa considering the Chiefs in the Mahomes era have owned Buffalo in the postseason — when it matters. The four January victories have come in wide varieties from convincing to heartbreaking from a Bills fan perspective.

So what’s the big gain here for KC?

Mostly, it’s potential for KC to improve from its current wild-card slot and keep pushing for what seems to be its birthright, the AFC West crown. The Chiefs trail the 6-2 Denver Broncos by a game and are tied with the Los Angeles Chargers at 5-3.

But it’s also a potential for the Chiefs to continue their show of force after a meh start to the season.

“Right now, Kansas City’s offense is humming. It’s humming 415 yards a game since Week 4, which is just absurd,” Siciliano said.

The Vegas oddsmakers, including BetMGM, are certainly buying into KC (which is likely to trigger more moans over Chiefs fatigue. Sorry, folks). Fawkes polled five of them and they all had the Chiefs as their Super Bowl favorite now.

“All of them now had the Chiefs atop their power ratings, several of them for the first time this season because a lot of them had the Bills before the season.

“A lot of them had the Ravens, some had the Eagles. This was the first time where it was unanimous. It was all the Chiefs. … So the Chiefs are high in Vegas’ power ratings. Patrick Mahomes is the MVP favorite. The Chiefs are the Super Bowl Bowl favorite. It kind of seems like all is back to right in the NFL world.”
