Is talent alone enough to carve out a lasting legacy in the NFL? Christian Gonzalez, the New England Patriots’ rising star at cornerback, isn’t just banking on his natural gifts—he’s hitting the film room hard, dissecting the moves of the game’s elite like Patrick Surtain II and Jalen Ramsey. Watching Gonzalez pore over tape of these defensive maestros, plus Patriots legend Steph Gilmore, you get the sense he’s not just aiming to be good; he wants to be unforgettable. Truth be told, in a league where raw ability can take you only so far, it’s the study, the grind, and a touch of obsession that separate the fleeting talents from the perennial standouts. And with the Patriots’ defense shaping up around him, it’s electrifying to watch this young cornerback’s journey toward greatness—provided he can stay healthy, the sky’s the limit.

The New England Patriots have an up-and-coming star at cornerback.
However, talent can only take you so far in the NFL.
Young players need to watch the greats to learn how to match them.
With that in mind, Christian Gonzalez admitted that he’s been studying Patrick Surtain II and Jalen Ramsey.
“DB-wise, I’ve always watched Pat, Jalen Ramsey, every DB gotta watch that. I’ve been watching a lot of Steph Gilmore tape lately. He a Patriot, so it’s even more special watching it,” Gonzalez said.

Surtain is arguably the best cornerback in the game.
The Denver Broncos star is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, and it might be a while before anybody comes close to his level.
As for Ramsey, he hasn’t had a typical Pro Bowl season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and his best years are behind him, but he was one of the best shutdown corners in the league in his prime.
Gonzalez has gotten off to a promising start to his career, and with the Patriots building their team around their defense, he should continue to be one of their pillars for years to come.
As a first-round pick from the 2023 NFL Draft, with his talent, physical tools and work ethic, he can be just as good as his favorite defensive backs if he can stay healthy.
