Colin Cowherd Drops Shocking Take on Kevin Durant Trade That No One Saw Coming
Kevin Durant’s move from the Phoenix Suns to the Houston Rockets might just be the basketball trade of the decade—or is it? I mean, here’s a guy who’s one of the greatest scorers ever, yet the haul the Suns got in return feels… underwhelming, to put it mildly. It’s the kind of shakeup that makes you wonder: was Durant really the problem in Phoenix, or is Houston simply about to unlock something special? As Colin Cowherd chimed in on The Herd, Durant’s not the villain in this saga, and honestly, watching how he’ll gel with the Rockets’ young talent might be one of the more fascinating storylines of the upcoming season. So, are we witnessing the dawn of a new contender or just another flashy trade with tricky ripples? Buckle up—this NBA offseason just got a whole lot more interesting.

It was no secret that the Phoenix Suns were working on a blockbuster Kevin Durant trade, and it also wasn’t surprising when news broke that he was eventually traded to the Houston Rockets on the morning of Game 7 of the NBA Finals.
The surprise was that he didn’t fetch quite the haul that many expected, as the Suns received Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the tenth overall pick in this week’s draft, and five second-round picks in exchange for the future Hall of Famer.
With news this big, everybody is going to have an opinion on the matter, and Colin Cowherd said on Monday’s episode of The Herd that Durant wasn’t the problem in Phoenix and that he believes this new partnership with the Rockets is going to work out well.

Durant is an ideal fit in Houston on paper, and the Rockets did a great job moving two expendable pieces from their young core without moving Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr., Amen Thompson, Tari Eason, or Reed Sheppard.
Green had a miserable postseason in the Rockets’ 7-game loss to the Golden State Warriors this year, and it makes little sense where he fits in with the Suns alongside Devin Booker and Bradley Beal.
Houston’s offense sputtered in that first-round loss, and it became clear that it needed an upgrade and the Rockets now have one of the greatest scorers of all time, who should slot right in at the four.
Many reports indicated the Suns had plenty of locker room issues this season, which seemed obvious when watching their games, but Durant still had an outstanding season despite the turmoil.
Houston is now a legitimate contender in 2025-26, and it will be fun to watch Durant fit in alongside some of the best young talent in the league.
