The 2024 edition of the tournament saw the top four conference champions – Oregon, Georgia, Boise State and Arizona State – all get home games despite Boise State and Arizona State being ranked outside the top five. All four teams were swiftly eliminated.
This new format would reward teams who did well enough to dominate the regular season and would only really punish teams that won conference titles while struggling in the regular season.
