Disgraced former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions may have been fired midseason in the midst of the Wolverines’ sign-stealing scandal. But he still contributed to the program’s first national championship since 1997.
In an interview with On3.com, the ex-UM assistant talked about that title-winning season in 2023 and how he still hasn’t received a championship ring from the school — which he doesn’t seem to harbor any resentment about.
“No, not yet,” Stalions told the outlet. “Maybe one day. Because the investigation is still going on … I don’t talk to them, they don’t talk to me, right? Once it’s over, who knows?”
While the investigation into their program certainly left a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths, it’s not as if Michigan didn’t have a loaded team and one of the best coaches in the country in Jim Harbaugh.
“What made Michigan so good, first and foremost … it starts with Jim Harbaugh, the head coach, hiring the right people, and that was his biggest strength is he was very decentralized command, as you would say in the military where he was not like this dictator of, ‘I need you do exactly this this exact way’ and ‘you to do this exactly this way,'” Stalions explained.
“His biggest strength was a combination of hiring the right people, getting a good staff and then being relatively hands off. Providing his commander’s intent, providing his guidance but not being, you know, over the shoulder, you know, and bugging you about exactly how you do everything.”
Stalions also talked about new head coach Sherrone Moore and how even in a “down year,” Big Blue was still able to upset teams like Ohio State and Alabama.
“Why is Michigan Football so good? The improvement of the daily habits and attention to detail that starts in the weight room. You don’t really get that edge anywhere else unless you have something like that where it is that attention to detail,” he concluded.
“That’s why Michigan is so good … they still had success because of those habits that are ingrained in the players and have been for years now.”
