Could the Eagles Land a Former First-Round Pick and Transform Their Season?

Ever wonder what it takes for a Super Bowl champion to keep that shiny trophy within arm’s reach? Well, the Philadelphia Eagles might just have the answer—and it’s buzzing around the rumor mill like wildfire. Picture this: a first-round pick from the 2021 draft, edge rusher Jaelan Phillips, possibly suiting up alongside Eagles’ stars before the trade deadline. Sounds like a match made in football heaven, right? Considering the Eagles’ defense has been scrambling a bit to find its edge this season—no pun intended—it’s no surprise that adding a player of Phillips’ caliber could be exactly what GM Howie Roseman’s aiming for. And honestly, with the Dolphins fumbling their season, this could be more than just a smart move; it might be a game-changer. Let’s dig into why this potential acquisition is sparking so much buzz in Philly and beyond.

The Philadelphia Eagles are always looking to add stars to their already stacked team.

That’s why it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them acquire another big-name player before the NFL trade deadline, with a Miami Dolphins star possibly on their radar.

“An emerging candidate for a viable trade is edge rusher Jaelan Phillips, and the team that needs him most is the reigning Super Bowl champions. Arguably Phillips’ best stretch in the NFL came in the middle of 2023, when he was playing for then-Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. He might not be cheap to acquire, and will be a free agent next season, but Eagles GM Howie Roseman is a wizard, and adding a healthy Phillips to the edge of a formidable defensive line could make all the difference in the run for a repeat,” Mia Fowler and Matt Okada wrote.

Truth be told, this would be a match made in heaven for both player and team.

On the one hand, Phillips has been very good for the Dolphins this season.

A first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, he likely would gladly welcome the opportunity to play for a Super Bowl-caliber team and reunite with one of the best defensive coordinators in the game.

Also, the Eagles’ defense has had some issues with its pass rush this season.

Nakobe Dean’s return from injury should help, and rookie Jihaad Campbell has shown signs of promise as an edge rusher, but that’s not his primary position.

Za’Darius Smith’s sudden retirement was a big blow, and even though Brandon Graham has come out of retirement to help, he’s not a full-time solution.

Phillips would be a solid addition, not only in the present but possibly for years to come.

This is the type of move the Eagles are known for making, and with the Dolphins’ season looking like a lost cause, they might as well take whatever they can get for Phillips.
