Tallion’s next turn in the rotation was scheduled for Saturday, but the Cubs will pitch that as a bullpen game with the opener to be announced.
“These things happen,” Counsell told reporters on Friday. “You have to, as an organization, be prepared for the next step, the next solution. And that’s where we’ll be.”
“There’s a little room for us to be flexible right now,” he added, “and we’ll use that to our advantage and go from there.”
While the Cubs are pursuing starting pitchers before the July 31 MLB trade deadline, Counsell has immediate needs to address. One possibility will be stretching out reliever Chris Flexen, who has pitched as a starter for most of his eight-year career.
