Dave Canales Drops Surprising Clue About Panthers RB’s Game-Changing Potential
So here we are, watching the Carolina Panthers cook up a classic “problem” that any coach would love to have: two running backs firing on all cylinders when you least expect it. Dave Canales, the head coach with a keen eye—and probably a few sleepless nights—has found himself caught in a delicious dilemma. Chuba Hubbard came in as the starter, only to hobble out, handing the reins to Rico Dowdle, who didn’t just step in… he seized the moment. Makes you wonder—if opportunity knocks this loudly, what door won’t get kicked down? With Bryce Young inching back from injury and the team steadily gaining traction, Canales is hinting that Dowdle’s role might just blow up bigger than anyone thought. Playoffs? Not quite yet. But hey, when momentum’s shifting and the run game’s humming, you kinda have to sit back and ask: could this Panthers squad finally be onto something special?

The Carolina Panthers have a good problem on their hands right now.
They have two talented running backs who are each having a strong season.
Chuba Hubbard entered as the starter, but an injury left the door open for Rico Dowdle to take over the running game, and the former Dallas Cowboys back has made the most of the opportunity.
“Chuba Hubbard has meant a lot to this team. We wanted to give him an opportunity following his calf injury. But we can’t ignore the fact that Rico has been exceptional,” head coach Dave Canales said.

Quarterback Bryce Young hasn’t lived up to the expectations of being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, but he was looking much better in his second year under Canales.
Veteran Andy Dalton didn’t do a good job filling in against the Buffalo Bills in Week 8, but reports are encouraging about Young’s return from injury to face the Green Bay Packers in Week 9.
Even if that’s not the case, it doesn’t sound like he is in danger of missing many more games.
Whatever the case, one thing’s for sure: The Panthers need to establish the run and feed Dowdle if they want to be efficient and keep the chains moving.
There’s no better way to open things up for the passing game while also keeping the quarterback out of harm’s way.
The Panthers may not be ready to make the playoffs, but they’re certainly trending in the right direction after years of struggles.
