Before coaching the Wolverines, May was the head coach at Florida Atlantic for six seasons. He compiled a 126-69 overall record and a 66-38 mark in conference play during his time at FAU. His highlight season came in 2023, when he was named Conference USA Coach of the Year, won both the regular season and tournament titles, and led the Owls to their first-ever Final Four appearance.
May also served as an assistant coach at Florida, Louisiana Tech, UAB, Murray State, and Eastern Michigan.
