Former Arizona Catcher Daniel Susac’s Flawless MLB Debut Sparks Buzz—Could He Be Baseball’s Next Big Star?

The 24-year-old, who debuted as a defensive sub just the day before, wasted no second in making an impression—smashing a curve ball pitch right out to right-center on his very first swing. The hits kept rolling: a slick single through the left side, a patient 4-pitch walk, then a smooth base knock up the middle to seal the deal. According to OPTA Stats, he’s the first catcher since Mike Piazza in ’92 to notch three hits and a walk in his MLB debut start. Talk about setting the bar high!

Drafted first round by the Athletics (back when they were still in Oakland), Susac’s path was anything but straightforward. Talent stacked all around him in the Athletics’ system limited his chances, but his time in Triple-A shone bright last season — helping Las Vegas reach the championship game. Surprisingly left off the Athletics’ 40-man roster, Susac entered the Rule 5 Draft, where Minnesota first picked him then flipped him to the Giants, landing him in the perfect spot—right back home in Northern California. Fun twist? His older brother Andrew made his Giants debut back in 2014.
