Before Morehouse, Mathis boasted an interesting college football journey as a player and a coach. Terance Mathis entered the NFL after being selected by the New York Jets in the 1990 draft following a standout collegiate career at the University of New Mexico, where he competed in both football and basketball. He later joined the Atlanta Falcons in 1994 and produced a career season with 111 receptions, finishing third in the league in touchdown catches and earning a Pro Bowl selection.
