Mathis later transitioned into coaching, serving as offensive coordinator and inside receivers coach at Savannah State Tigers football in 2011 and 2012. During his time leading the Maroon Tigers, the program showed some signs of progress even as the team continued to face challenges on the field.
Now, he looks to turn around an Athens Christian team that finished with a 4-6 record in 2025 and hasn’t had a winning season since 2021.
